They look the same, they charge the same, and the screen is the same — so why does one cost more than the other? Here is what actually differs between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, what the difference costs in rand on the used market, and which one makes sense for which buyer.

The iPhone 14 is the better phone. The iPhone 13 is the better buy. On our shelf today the 14 costs R401 more than the 13 for the same 128GB — about 8% on top — and what you get for that is a bigger camera sensor, a little more RAM and a slightly larger battery. Those are real upgrades, but none of them changes how the phone feels in your hand, because from the outside the two are indistinguishable.
So the decision is really about time. If you upgrade every two or three years, save the R401 and buy the iPhone 13. If you want the phone to still feel current in five years, the iPhone 14 starts its software life one year later and ends it one year later too.
| Spec | iPhone 13 | iPhone 14 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen | 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED 60Hz | 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED 60Hz | Identical panel: 60Hz on both, no ProMotion |
| Chip | A15 Bionic | A15 Bionic | Same A15 family — the 14 runs the 5-core GPU version from the 13 Pro |
| RAM | 4GB | 6GB | 2GB more keeps more apps alive in the background on the 14 |
| Camera | 12MP dual | 12MP dual | The 14's main sensor is larger (f/1.5) with Photonic Engine and Action Mode |
| Battery | 3240mAh | 3279mAh | Near-identical; the 14 ekes out slightly longer days |
| Network | 5G | 5G | Both 5G, both unlocked for MTN, Vodacom, Telkom and Cell C |
The 14's main sensor is physically larger (f/1.5 versus f/1.6), which pulls in more light — the difference shows up indoors, at dinner tables, at concerts. The Photonic Engine compounds that in low light, and the front camera finally got autofocus, so selfies taken at arm's length are no longer a coin flip. Video gains Action Mode, a stabilisation mode that keeps handheld running footage watchable.
Both are A15 Bionic, but the 14 carries the 5-core GPU variant Apple reserved for the 13 Pro, alongside 6GB of RAM instead of the 13's 4GB. In day-to-day use you will not feel it; where it shows is heavy multitasking and games, and in how gracefully the phone ages as apps get heavier.
The 14 packs a marginally bigger cell (3279mAh versus 3240mAh) — think minutes, not hours. More meaningful is Crash Detection: the 14's motion sensors and microphone can detect a severe car crash and call emergency services automatically. South Africans spend a lot of time on long roads; it is the one feature with no 13 equivalent.
The design, the weight, the buttons, the 6.1-inch 60Hz screen, Face ID, MagSafe, and — important — the Lightning port. Neither phone has USB-C; that arrived with the iPhone 15. If a USB-C cable is the thing you actually want, neither of these is the phone to buy.
Every price below is live from our shelf in Grade A — a tested, genuine, network-unlocked handset with a 6-month warranty. The "gap" column is the honest cost of the upgrade.
| Storage | iPhone 13 | iPhone 14 | Gap |

| 256GB | R5,394 | R5,928 | R534 |
For that R401 you are buying roughly one extra year of software life and a better indoor camera. That is a fair trade if you photograph at night or hold phones long; it is a poor one if neither describes you. And remember the used-market logic that got you here: the 13 has already done most of its depreciation, while the 14 has a little further to fall.
…budget leads, you mostly shoot in daylight, and you upgrade every two or three years. Same design, same screen, same port — from R4,709.
See the iPhone 13…you keep phones four years or more, take low-light photos, or want Crash Detection on the road. The premium is R401 on 128GB.
See the iPhone 14…both still use Lightning. The iPhone 15 moved to USB-C and starts at R7,148 on our shelf — one generation up, and the cable stops being special.
See the iPhone 15The 13 and 14 each come in four shapes: the standard model, a small mini (13 only), a big-battery Plus (14 only), and the Pro pair. The Pro models are the ones with 120Hz ProMotion screens — that, not the chip, is what makes them feel faster.

Battery health is the number that matters most on a used iPhone, more than the model on the box. A three-year-old 14 at 75% health is a worse buy than a healthy 13. Our rule removes the guesswork: any unit that tests below 80% gets a new battery before dispatch, and the measured health of your specific handset is printed on the invoice. Both models are covered by the same 6-month warranty including battery, with the courier paid both ways.
On our shelf the gap is R401 on 128GB and R534 on 256GB. That buys a bigger main camera sensor, 2GB more RAM, Crash Detection and a slightly bigger battery — real improvements, but the design, screen and charging are identical. If rand-per-feature is the metric, the 13 wins; if you will keep the phone four years or more, take the 14.
Yes — both charge over Lightning and both work with the same MagSafe accessories. Apple only moved to USB-C with the iPhone 15, so if a USB-C cable is what you want, start there instead.
The iPhone 14, clearly but not massively. Its main sensor is larger (f/1.5 versus f/1.6), the Photonic Engine lifts low-light photos, and the front camera gains autofocus. In good daylight the two are hard to tell apart; for video, the 14 adds Action Mode stabilisation for handheld running shots.
Apple does not publish end dates, but it typically supports iPhones for around six years after launch. The 13 shipped in 2021 and the 14 in 2022, so both still have years of iOS updates ahead — the 14 simply starts a year later and finishes a year later.
