Two generations, both with USB-C, both with the Dynamic Island — so what exactly are you paying for when you move from a 15 to a 16? Here is the honest answer in rand: the chip, the AI features it unlocks, the camera button, the battery, and the twist that the 15 Pro has quietly become the best deal of the three.

The iPhone 15 is the better buy for most South Africans. The iPhone 16 is the better phone — but only in the ways you notice slowly: the A18 chip, 2GB more RAM, a battery that genuinely lasts longer, and support for Apple Intelligence, which the A16 inside the 15 will never get. On our shelf today that difference costs R2,070 on 128GB, about 22% on top.
There is also a third answer nobody advertises. The iPhone 15 Pro has fallen to within R167 of the plain iPhone 16 — so for the same money you are choosing between this year's chip and last year's Pro: 120Hz ProMotion, a triple camera with 3x zoom, titanium, and an A17 Pro that does run Apple Intelligence. For a lot of buyers, that is the smartest R9,385 on the shelf.
| Spec | iPhone 15 | iPhone 16 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen | 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED 60Hz | 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED 60Hz | Identical 6.1-inch 60Hz panel — 120Hz ProMotion is Pro-only |
| Chip | A16 Bionic | A18 | A18 in the 16 runs Apple Intelligence; the A16 in the 15 cannot |
| RAM | 6GB | 8GB | 2GB more on the 16 keeps apps alive and gives AI features headroom |
| Camera | 48MP dual | 48MP dual | Same 48MP main; the 16 adds the Camera Control button and macro |
| Battery | 3349mAh | 3561mAh | Bigger cell and a more efficient chip — a difference you can feel |
| Network | 5G · USB-C | 5G · USB-C | Both 5G over USB-C, both unlocked for MTN, Vodacom, Telkom and Cell C |
The 16 runs the A18; the 15 runs the A16 Bionic from the 14 Pro. In everyday scrolling, messaging and photography you will not feel the difference. Where it matters is the future: Apple Intelligence requires an A17 Pro or newer, so the plain 15 is locked out of Apple's AI features for good, while the 16 gets them. If Siri-that-actually-listens, notification summaries and on-device writing tools sound useful to you, the 16 is the cheapest way in.
Same 48MP main sensor, same 12MP ultra-wide. What the 16 adds is handling: a Camera Control button under the volume keys that half-presses to lock focus like a real camera, macro photography through the ultra-wide, and Photographic Styles you can re-adjust after taking the shot. Convenience rather than image quality — the leap is in the Pro line.
Unlike the 13-to-14 step, where the battery was effectively unchanged, the 16 pairs a bigger cell with a more efficient chip and comes out clearly ahead on screen-on time. For a used buyer this matters twice over: batteries age, so starting from a stronger position and a newer cell means more healthy years. Every unit we ship has already been checked, and any reading under 80% gets a new battery before dispatch.
The 16 inherits the customizable Action button from the 15 Pro — set it to torch, camera, translation, whatever you reach for most. Everything else is carried over: the design, Face ID, the Dynamic Island, MagSafe, and USB-C, so cables and cases and chargers carry across from either phone. Neither standard model has the 120Hz screen — that is still a Pro feature in both generations.
Every price below is live from our shelf in Grade A — a tested, genuine, network-unlocked handset with a 6-month warranty. The "gap" column is the honest cost of moving up a generation.
| Storage | iPhone 15 | iPhone 16 | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 128GB | R7,148 | R9,218 | R2,070 |
| 256GB | R7,799 | R9,853 | R2,054 |
| 512GB | R8,484 | R10,471 | R1,987 |
For R2,070 you are buying the A18 chip and its AI future, a bigger battery, macro and the camera button. That is a better deal than the 13-versus-14 premium ever was — but it is still real money, and the 15 covers the basics of a modern iPhone (USB-C, Dynamic Island, 48MP camera, all-day battery for most people) from R7,148.

See the iPhone 15…you keep a phone four or five years, take photos close-up, or want Apple Intelligence. The premium is R2,070 on 128GB — and the battery is the part you will notice first.
See the iPhone 16…you want the 120Hz screen and a triple camera, and don't mind missing the very newest chip. It sits R167 above the plain 16 at R9,385 — and its A17 Pro does run Apple Intelligence.

On a used iPhone, battery health matters more than the model on the box — a 16 at 74% is a worse buy than a healthy 15. Our rule removes the guesswork: any unit that tests below 80% gets a new battery before dispatch, and the measured health of your specific handset is printed on the invoice. Both models carry the same 6-month warranty including battery, with the courier paid both ways and an answer within 10 business days.
On our shelf the gap is R2,070 on 128GB, about 22% on top. That buys the A18 chip with Apple Intelligence, 8GB of RAM, the Camera Control button, macro photography and a meaningfully bigger battery. If you hold a phone for four or five years, that is cheap future-proofing; if you upgrade every two or three, the 15 is already excellent.
No. Apple Intelligence needs an A17 Pro chip or newer, so it runs on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max but not the standard iPhone 15. Every model in the iPhone 16 line supports it, including the plain 16 — that is the clearest single reason to move up a generation.
Yes. The 15 was the first standard iPhone with USB-C, and the 16 kept it — one cable charges either, and both work with the same MagSafe accessories. Unlike the 13-versus-14 decision, the port is not a factor here.
Both centre on the same 48MP main sensor with a 12MP ultra-wide and the same video pipeline. The 16 adds a dedicated Camera Control button on the edge, macro photography through the ultra-wide, and next-generation Photographic Styles you can adjust after the shot. Useful, not transformative — the real camera step-change lives in the Pro models.
